Access for All
Making your web site accessible to all regardless of their situation is not only in the spirit of the web, but it has also been a legal requirement ever since the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) was passed in 1995. It is now unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a person by refusing to provide any service which it provides to other members of the public. With websites, this means considering access to all whatever their hardware, software, native language, culture, location, physical or mental abilities.
However, many businesses either overlook this altogether, or are uninformed about exactly what this means. As a result, accessibility standards are still a comparitively low priority for the majority of businesses where their web presence is concerned.
Be informed
Creating and maintaining a website which conforms to good accessibility standards needn't be difficult. The main stumbling block in the case of many businesses is a lack of information and understanding of what is required and how to achieve it. However, there is a hugely wide ranging and informative resource in the shape of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The W3C, in their own words, "develop specifications, guidelines, softward and tools to lead the Web to its full potential". It was the W3C who initiated and spearheaded a very successful campaign for equal access rights online which resulted in the Disability Discrimination Act being passed.
The W3C first published guidelines for Web content, user agents, and authoring tools in February 1997 in the form of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). Since then the W3C have continuously reviewed and updated these Web Content and Accessibility Guidelines to improve equal opportunities and to help businesses communicate more effectively with their target group.
